Sjoerd Groenhuis

Sjoerd Groenhuis started his maritime training 1966 and since 1976 has worked as as 3rd, 2nd and chief deck officer, main sailing on oil tankers from 40.000 dwt up to 230.000 dwt. He possesses his master mariner certificate unrestricted. Since then he obtained a MSc in nautical science and mathematics.

After a career at sea he joined the Netherlands Nautical Institute as a project manager for nautical studies mainly to act as nautical expert for the Dutch nNutical Administration on navigation, accident investigation and cargo handling on tankers. I addition he was a member of the IMO working group on casualty statistics.

In 1988 Sjoerd joined the Maritime Research Institute (MARIN) as ship handling simulator instructor for masters and pilots and project manager for ship handling research projects. After several years he joined the Shipping and Transport College in Rotterdam as an senior lecturer, ship handling and cargo handling simulator instructor, and developer of training programs for lecturer on seamanship subjects.

In addition he was a partner in the EU Port State Control project for the development of an advanced training programme (EPSCOT) and consultant regarding studies to an STCW 95 based upgrade of the curricula of the nautical studies in the Baltic area. He is staff lecturer during aspirant pilot education programs in South Africa and staff Lecturer ‘Cargo Management’ for the Port & Shipping course for the NMU in Rotterdam and South Korea.
