3 questions for Tom Abbenhues

1. Why is your job/discipline important?
The maritime sector is a vital part of the world economy as roughly 90% of everything we use, including our food and raw materials, reaches us on a ship. Without skillful sailors, none of these materials would arrive – or at greater costs –  and I am really proud to be part of this important industry.

2.What do you think is the most important development in your field?
There are many things happening! First, I think the efforts to make shipping more efficient and sustainable. This will not only reduce costs or port stay, but will directly contribute to the challenges we face when it comes to climate change.

Second is the change in education and training of future seafarers, thanks to the introduction of digital tools. These ensure that education better suits the needs of these people, independent of location and time.

3. What is the most important lesson you would like to give to young professionals?
Invest in yourself and put in the (extra) effort in developing yourself. Ask questions, think about your process and reevaluate. Experience is gained by actively being involved in your development, not by an USB stick!
